Movie Review: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails 2015 *A Step Above The Maze*

It’s been a while since I wrote any reviews and I must apologize. I know some of you guys have been wondering why. No reason would be good enough, just know this… GHMOVIE FREAK is here to stay. The new website is almost ready… keep your fingers crossed. Enjoy the read. Cheers!!

For anyone who has seen last years (exactly one year) release of The Maze Runner, this very title would not be new to you. The prequel ended with a cliff hanger that certainly had everyone expecting what the follow up title would deliver.

This follow up kicks off right after where the prequel ended…. As Thomas played by Dylan O’Brien (Most popular for his role in Teen Wolf) and the rest of the Gladers after escaping the maze now face other unexpected challenges as they search for resistance fighters to help fight WCKD.

Well anyone who has seen the first movie would easily be able to follow the happenings of this one. (For anyone who hasn’t seen the first Maze Runner, I would advise that you do so before going to see Scorch Trails).

Be prepared to find that this second installment does pack more action and thrill than the first. Not to over hype it, but yes…. It was more entertaining.  Very unexpected I must say, obviously because of the use of other scenes unlike the first, which had all of the story line restricted to the insides of the maze and the glades. In this movie you get to see gun fights, explosions, chases, daring escapes and zombies.

Yes… ZOMBIES.

I personally wasn’t expecting zombies and from what I have read online the writers might have really changed the story line of the original books these titles are based off. (Bae, turned, looked at me and said,”Really, you brought me here to see Zombies? Really?”  lol).

I haven’t read any of the books but it seems those who have are not impressed with the turn this movie is taking. Nonetheless, I feel adding zombies made sense and kind of adds some depth and clarity to the entire plot of the first movie.

Apparently the kids where put in the maze to test their strengths to find a strain or enzymes in their genes that can be used to make a cure for a virus that has been plaguing the world. (Or so… lol). 

If not anything, Scorch Trails really does make you appreciate the Maze runner movie some more… you begin to get that “Ok, this all makes sense now” feeling at some points in the movie. (That is, if you really are paying attention to it).

Like always I am impressed with good CGI, the directors didn’t go overboard with it. A perfect blend of good acting, great cinematography and flawless CGI can do a lot of good for even the poorest scripts. Be prepared to be impressed if you are a sucker for good visuals like I am.  I would love to see this movie again just to appreciate these good shots and ride the thrill that its actions scenes provided.

Another good thing about this movie was the acting. In my opinion the lead Dylan O’Brien is certainly a star to look out for.  There were some new additions to the lead roles for this movie. Unfortunately, the new additions or supporting lead role cast weren’t given that many lines so it’s almost difficult to keep up with the characters names and exactly why they were in those scenes. Nonetheless, the acting was on point. Better than some other reigning titles that also parade an equally young cast lineup.

As much as Scorch Trails adds some depth to the plot of The Maze runner, it’s still likely to leave you confused and wondering what the entire movie is about. There are still many unanswered questions which I hope would be answered in the next installment. (Let’s pray it’s the last installment and not another Part 1 & 2 thing).  Again this one ended with cliffhanger that makes you thirst already for the next movie.  I already can’t wait for this time next year. (Its projected release date).

This might not be a perfect movie in terms of understanding and big cast names, but its 2hrs 11mins run-time is worth it. You are guaranteed of excitement, thrill, good entertainment and an equally fulfilling climax.  Comparing this to the prequel, The Maze Runner is like an innocent new born baby and Scorch Trails is and blooming daring adolescent.  Let’s wait patiently to see how its adult life plays out

That is why I would rate this…( a well-deserved)…. 7/10. I would strongly recommend every movie lover to go see this tile.

Movie Review: Mad Max: Fury Road 2015 *Madness to Redemption*

Well…. Half way into this movie I was just wondering how I was going to write this review. What was I going to say about this movie? Here it goes…

I certainly was looking forward to the release of this movie … and was in desperate need for some chill time at the cinemas. (It was well deserved).  Mad Max surely isn't that popular as I thought it would be considering that I shared the cinema hall with just about eight other people. Maybe because there wasn't much hype or fuss about it here in Ghana. Nonetheless I would doubt if anyone who has seen the pre-release trailers would dare say “I am not interested in watching this movie”. Trust me… those teaser trailers were enough to grab my attention months ago.

Mad Max : Fury Road is a futuristic apocalyptic story set in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the simple necessities of life. Following the story of two rebels on the run, who just might be able to help restore order. There's Max, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a strong willed woman trying to find her way back to her childhood homeland.

Tom Hardy beat Jeremy Renner and host of likable stars to land this lead role as Max alongside Charlize Theron (Furiosa), Nicolas Hoult and Hugh Keays-Byrn.

This title actually is a reboot of the Mad Max movies starring Mel Gibson (Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome ) shot in the late 70s and 80s. (Of course I wasn't born then but I have seen all 3 movies.. I am a certified MOVIE FREAK that’s why.lol)

It’s easier for me to understand why this movie is a big deal because I have seen the earlier titles so I kind of see the need for this reboot. And that gives me more appreciation for this movie.

For starters, unlike most apocalyptic movies you might have seen instead of the usual dry, dusty deserts this one has a lot of color and depth. The directors did well to capture certain level of beauty in a dry waste land. I loved every bit of the cinematography. Compared to the previous movies you immediately feel the midas touch of technology in the making of this movie.

For the story line itself… I would describe it as, high octane, full throttle action packed and chaotic. Yes right from the start to the very end the entire story line keeps an action sequence that doesn't slow down or dull you enough to change the vibe of the movie. The chaotic madness can in no way be classified as humorous at all. If you are thinking of going to laugh at this movie expecting some “Madness” that would crack you up … forget it. It’s all seriousness with a lot of explosions and daring stunts. Insane action that would literally blow you away and have you at the edge of you seat for the entire run time.  This is a huge step up from the earlier movies… exactly what it was meant to be…equally chaotic and horrific yet more intense and breathtakingly exciting. In fact at some point it becomes even difficult to keep up with the thrill and you can’t afford to blink all for the fear for losing sight of any of the action. Oh.. there is also the hard rock fused score that just keeps your pulse rushing with adrenaline. (If there is anything else that I love next to movies, it would be rock music and or Waakye .. lol)  Although it’s cold, violent and visceral you can also feel the underlying elements of hope, loyalty, reverence and redemption.  I am confident to say all those trailers and featurettes did promise and deliver for me.

Besides the almost unnoticeable holes in the actual plot and backdrop of the movie, there also wasn't too much dialogue in the story line, especially for the Max character. I feel this was all part of the makers attempt at making him seem darker, confused and mysterious. I guess it worked even though I didn't like that. At some point I felt I like the movie should have been titled Mad Furiosa instead.  I was also expecting that the reboot would have started from before the apocalypse era like the first Mad Max (1979) movie did. Maybe the makers would consider doing that as this revamped franchise kicks off and progresses. My only fear is that some people might get lost in all the chaos and confusion and may not give this title the appreciation it fully deserves.

It’s always refreshing for me to watch a movie as thrilling and entertaining as this was. Especially one that has come back from thirty years.  I am now more interested in seeing how the follow up sequels do as well.

This is certainly time well spent.. my chill time wasn't wasted at all going to see this movie. And I can’t wait to see it again. I am scoring this  8/10.

Movie Review: Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015 *Avengers Creates Invaders*

Ok so my home boy got my back again with this one… couldn't make it for the premiere of Avengers so Lewis hooked me up with this review. Watch out for the new website soon. The ideas coming up are all very crazy… trust me.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Well, spending the entire week re-living the origins of The Avengers helped make real meaning to this movie. Anyone sitting in the cinema hall just to watch the The Avengers: Age of Ultron without watching Captain America (The First Avenger and Winter Soldier) respectively, both installments of Thor as well as the first installment of The Avengers would be wasting his/her time and money. Certainly, because the underlying theme of Age of Ultron largely relates to the back stories of the various Avengers.

The story sets of in a good tone in mid battle, where the previous cast reprise their roles as Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarelett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) take down the bad guys of HYDRA led by Baron Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann) just to retrieve Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) scepter (History) New characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen) join in on the battle but not on The Avengers team.

Ultron (James Spader) basically the super villain computer programme created by Tony Stark and Dr. Bruce Banner by reverse engineering the gem in Loki’s scepter plans to wipe out the entire human race with his legion of robot. This entire movie tries to blend Sci- fi with myth in a perfect mix that makes it quite difficult to even separate the two. For anyone who might have also paid close attention to the previous movies that lead or build up to this title, I am sure you would also noticed the upgrade in the costumes of the Avengers. There is no way any one can miss that. I was really impressed with the new costumes.

Director/writer Joss Whedon did great to get Stan Lee a small cameo role in the movie that I find so cool. One funny thing others may complain about The Avengers series is the fact that all terrorist and villains are of astral forms and machines. Yes it can be so because the story is FICTIONAL. What more do you expect from this perfect blend of fiction.  Also very obvious in this title is the humor. I enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr/Tony Stark, the most funniest and his sarcasm plus equally great bits of humor from the other cast just does the job of turning down a notch the whole vibe of seriousness that followed this movie. You also get to see a good spirit of family and team building in this.

The setting as good though, travelling around the world, unlike the battle of New York.  And for the first time ….The Avengers were in Africa. CGI effects were well done and show how technology is advancing. Good one there.

Oh yes, I am sure there are going to be sequels to come as hints were dropped in there somewhere as the movie played especially at the ending scene.. With all new the new recruits assembling at the new S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters.

With a runtime of 141 minutes I am confident enough to say “Time well spent”.

Box office prediction: An Absolute Hit

My Rating: 8.5/10. Because for a second, I lost touch with reality. Could have made a 9/10 but then I woke up from Fiction Land before.

Movie Review: Fast & Furious 7 2015 *The Last Ride*

Have you ever waited so long for something and finally get it and feel so satisfied and fulfilled? Well that is me right now. 

If you had asked me a couple of months back I would probably have said I wasn’t sure April 3rd 2015 was ever going to come. But it did and it was definitely worth the wait. 

I am not the only person who was looking forward to this movie which was originally supposed to be have been released sometime in June 2014. But almost got shut down after the unexpected demise of Paul Walker. It would suffice to say that this could probably be the most looked forward-to movie for this year considering that people all over the world interested in this franchise certainly wanted to see how this last ride was going to be.

Fast & Furious 7 follows the story of Fast and Furious 6 but details events that happen after The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift (the third installment in the franchise). I know this can get a bit confusing but anyone who is very familiar with the FNF franchise would certainly get it. 

This movie sees the big brother of Owen Shaw from the last movie coming for vengeance against Toretto and his family. 

Jason Statham (The Transporter) plays the big bad brother. I honestly think no one else… I mean no other actor that comes to mind… could have played this role much better. Jason is usually cast as a hero or good guy in most movies but this time he plays the most bad ass villain I have ever come across. Who ever made this casting decision needs to be given all of the props. Do you remember seeing any movie and actually started to like the bad guy? This is it!! You get to see the same very intense Jason Statham you are familiar with in this movie except this time around committed to killing anyone associated to his brother’s death. (Dude was just too bad ass to not to appreciate). 

You still get to see the familiar lead roles from the previous movie of course except Sung Kang and Gal Gaddot whose characters died off in the last movie. Kurt Russell and Djimon Hounsou both delivered in their roles. 

Obviously the most commendable thing about this movie would have to be how they managed to complete it without lead, Paul Walker. Apparently with the help of his brothers, stunt body doubles and CGI it is almost unnoticeable that he wasn't alive till the completion of the movie. Personally I paid very close attention hoping to spot a single scene in which I could clearly identify that Paul himself wasn't that character but I couldn't. Everything was spot on and it was almost as if he played out all his scenes before his tragic death. This clearly shows how much effort was put into this movie. They did turn the heat all the way up this time… double the action and the intensity of the last movie. Too many crazy and daring stunts not to leave anyone not impressed after seeing this movie. Yes, all the prerelease trailers, promos and featurettes intended to wet your appetites did under promise. This movie packs more action than all the others in the franchise combined if you ask me. And the fight scenes are just too epic. The camera angles make it all more appreciable. Even Christopher Bridges (Ludacris) has a fight scene that would shock you. 

I feel the producers were very much keen on living everyone shell shocked with the action sequences in this movie. I say this because some of the stunts to me seemed too over exaggerated and very impossible. Although not necessarily a bad thing I wasn’t quite fooled enough by some of the stunts. I have always found over exaggerated stunts not appealing….. they kind of offset the good vibe the movie might be giving for a moment or two. Well, a little exaggeration isn't bad as long as it leaves the viewer in awe… but when it goes too much over the top it starts to become questionable… and then not entertaining.. 

I also noticed some continuity flaws in how they tried to merge the last movie with the third installment which felt a bit off for me. (That too doesn't matter). Who cares anyway? 

You can’t miss the underlying themes of virtue of family, love and honor. All these make it almost impossible not to love every single bit of this movie. 

Fast & Furious 7 certainly is the Ultimate tribute to Paul Walker; some of the scenes just make you want to cry… not that they were depressingly sad. They just remind you of the beauty of life and the value of having good people around. I had my own ideas of how they would bid farewell to Paul but I was not only left surprised that none of my ideas were right but I was left very emotional. (I had my moments, i wont lie)

In all I would score this movie a perfect 8.5/10 any day. As much as I was kept at the edge of my seat all thorough the length of the movie I had my fair measure of laughter as well at some of the carefully placed humor dialogues. I won’t hesitate to watch this movie all over again multiple times and won’t make the mistake of not having it as part of my FNF box set. 

YES… this was a GOOD movie and everyone has to see it

Ghanaian Movie Review: I DO 2015 *Kobi Rana Strikes Again*

Ok so my homeboy Lewis decided to give this movie review “thingy” a shot. Since I wasn't able to make it to the premiere and he was…. (With all those fine girls he was posing on IG with lol). 

It was a bit surprising to see the Silverbird cinemas this packed. I mean I frequent there a lot but had never seen a crowd this big all wanting to catch the premiere of “I Do”. This made me even more eager to see it and eventual tell how it goes. Leave it to young talented and overly confident Kobi Rana to do an awesome job to publicize his work to create so many wave and attention. 

“I DO”, a Ghanaian produced movie which stars the likes of Van Vicker, the producer herself Kafui Danku, Nana Ama Mcbrown, BBA star Elikem Kormodzi, Roselyn Ngissah, Jasmine Baroudi, Mauli Gavor and Jose Tolbert . The director Kobi Rana had the entire cinema applauding the great effort he put into making this movie a success. From start to end, throughout the 100 minutes long drama, romance and comedy filled movies.

Obviously you would would have high expectations from a movie with huge backing from brands like Hauwei, Moet and La Palm Royal 

The movie starts with the exchange of vows by the four couples without going through how they met up and all the “blah blah blah” stuff. It was right on point for that fact. It later goes on to reveal certain aspects of their lives to which their partners knew nothing about.

Though the entire movie takes place over one night (honeymoon) at an exquisite hotel, the rooms well prepared with some Champaign’s, shower robes and the beds well laid. The whole “one night” movie idea reminded me of another Kobi Rana movie, Hotel Babylon. 

The characters played their roles well without much flaws. Jasmine Baroudi, who plays Sena happens to be what society looks down upon, thus a lesbian, and so had to please society by marrying Eli (Elikem Kormordzi). Sena and her lesbian partner had their motives planned out for the night where they were to execute the groom and run off with her partner.

Adotey (Van Vicker) had an ordeal all night long with her partner. But he showed why love conquers all. In that, her partner Anita (Nana Ama McBrown) who had a secret of having contracted a sexually transmitted infection and couldn’t risk infecting Adotey. So out of fear and anxiety she tried committing suicide to end all things. But Adotey gave her reasons to stop her actions. He had a funny horror dream of Anita during his nap in the tub.

Randy (Jose Tolbert) the rich kid. He had an empire to inherit once he was married. He therefore had to marry Charlotte A.K.A. Shali Jata Jantra, (Producer Kafui Danku) a“hooker”. He signed a contract with her to get this done but later fell in love with her.

Ike (Mawuli Gavor) and Esi (Roselyn Ngissah), the funniest couple had their share of the breezy night. With Ike suffering with erectile dysfunction due to use of illicit drugs in the past and Esi wanting to let go off her cravings had to deal with their own funny problems.

The score for the movie was good. Most people might not pay attention to these things but the right score certainly adds a depth to the entire story line. The live band musical surprise for the grooms by their brides went well with the audience where they were singing along. The grooms had their go with teasing dance choreography for the ladies. Sort of something that you might of seen in Hollywood’s The Best Man Holiday. Either which way it wasn't corny as anyone would have expected it to be.

Honestly it was refreshing to see a Ghanaian movie that was not only well produced but equally indulging and entertaining as well. I have always believed that the Ghanaian film industry had a better future and after seeing “I Do” I am more reassured of that. 

In my books I rate this a perfect 7/10..... I enjoyed every single bit of this movie. 

This movie was good and did really match the hype.

Movie Review: Focus 2015 *CON OR BE CONNED*

It’s been a very long while since I reviewed anything. I must apologize…. New work schedule keeping me awful busy but I am loving it… regardless.  It’s been a very busy past couple of weeks but I finally got some time on my hands and decided to see a movie to help de-stress.

I had to choose between Jupiter Ascending and Focus. But it was easy to pick because Jupiter Ascending had been showing for some time now already.

Focus tells the story of a con artist who encounters someone from his past on his latest scheme and how things get messy thereafter.

On the surface this seems more like a very simple plot… something most people would most likely over look and might not be so interested in seeing.  But then if you know Will Smith…. You certainly would be interested in seeing this movie. Yes… that was one of the “pluses” that aided in me choosing to see this title over Jupiter Ascending. He starred alongside Margot Robbie from The Wolf of Wall Street.  Considering that Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck both turned down the chance to play the lead role in this movie after Ryan Gosling had dropped out I feel Will Smith did save the day  otherwise this would have been a very good movie gone to waste.

Anyone would easily agree with me that this could be Will Smith’s most looked forward to movie since 2013’s After Earth which was a huge Hollywood miss.  For me it was considering that I hadn't seen him in any major lead role since After Earth.

This title didn't pack that much of a huge cast or popular faces surprisingly. But it was certainly worth the time I spent on seeing it. (My time matters more to me than the money spent on tickets lol). 

The script was perfect…  I have always thought it must be extra work writing a script about con artist and their modus operandi.  After seeing movies like Catch Me if You Can, Ocean’s  Eleven, American Hustle and MatchSick Men  (Several others as well) I had a fair idea of what to expect going in to see focus. But in the end I was more than impressed with the movie.

Focus had a very sophisticated -high end feel to the whole idea of con artistry. Something I don’t remember ever experiencing or noticing in all the other con art movies I mentioned.  The story line was not only just too clever as you would expect for a movie of its kind but also certainly had a lot of unexpected twists.. Not to mean it was hard to follow.. but most of the scenes just leaves you “Oh I didn't see that coming”.  Very unpredictable....for me that is a good thing in any movie. It was almost like getting myself coned in most parts of the story. A script is always as good as how surprising and unexpected the turn of events are as the story unfolds.  I can’t fault the story line in anyway. It just had me interested from start to finish. From the very impressive pick-pocketing up to the mind startling intellect scamming. It’s not always that you get to see conning made this much appealing and enticing.  Beneath it all you get to have a clear picture of how clever and smart you would need to be in order to be a successful con artist. (Not that I believe anyone would want to be...lol)

The entire movie kept a calm and steady pace from start to finish. If you are looking for some daring action sequences in this one don’t expect to find any because the story didn't have the need for any of that. One thing that it did have was a little tiny bit of romance. Not the corny, cliché kind… but it definitely did add some weight to the context of this movie. Half of the time I found my subconscious debating over if it was really love between Will and Margot all just part of the con.

My only problem with the movie was the fact that it was classed comedy. In no way do I see this movie under that category at all. And neither can it be classified as a Romantic Comedy.  Certainly it did pack some scenes of very mature and clever humor that are almost very easy to miss but it also certainly isn't the type of movie that would leave you holding on to your ribs whilst trying not to die from laughter. If you expecting to go to this movie to be cracked up good get ready to be disappointed in that area.

In all I was very impressed with this movie and I am glad that Will has got his groove back after disappointing us all in AfterEarth.  I won’t   hesitate to score this title 7.5/10 because it certainly did its job of helping me de-stress. I will definitely love to see this movie all over again.

I recommend this movie for anyone who appreciates a good story line

Movie Review: American Sniper 2015 *HERO or VILLAIN*

Welcome to 2015.

Last year was a very great year for the film world and it ended with some very cool releases. I am working on a feature on the Top 10 movies for 2014. (It should be ready soon, “Fingers Crossed”)

I just couldn't wait to start my 2015 movie year with American Sniper, the pre-release trailer I saw last year was too good to ignore and definitely had me psyched about seeing this title. 

American Sniper details the true live events of US Navy Seals sniper, Chris Kyle who is credited with 160 kills during his four tours of duty and how he struggles with his relationship with the war and how he manages to handle it with his wife and kids once he has returned home.

I recall starting 2014 with Lone Survivor (that starred Mark Wahlberg. Taylor Kitsch and Ben Foster) another true story about US NAVY SEALS which was quite good but I hadn't started this blog then so I have no review for that. (Anyways see my TOP FIVE: 2014 MOVIES YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN BY NOW)

As usual I had high expectations for this movie considering that the teaser had really left me wanting to see more. 

Bradley Cooper got to star as Chris Kyle and if you ask me I would score him a perfect 10 for that role. Anyone who is familiar with movies like Limitless, American Hustle, The Hangover and Silver linings playbook needs to see Bradley’s performance here so as to fully appreciate how versatile of an actor he is. I am always more than impressed when an actor goes through some form of physical transformation just to play a role. In this movie it was obvious that he had to put on some weight so as to fully embody the persona of Chris Kyle at 30 years. Regardless, I feel his acting was as good as always. I am not just saying this because I am a fan but it’s the truth… Plain and Simple. 

I am a real sucker for movies about soldiers because they usual portray a lot of relatively realistic bravely and heroism and this particular title wasn't an exception. The story was well told taking into consideration aspects of Chris’ life before he joined the military and his life with his family as well. It’s not everyday that we get an inside scoop of how and why these brave soldiers decided they wanted to put their lives on the line and the kind of emotional and psychological battles they have to fight and live with for the rest of their lives. Believe me when I say this 2hrs 12mins film was more than just about shooting people. Enough focus was given to Chris Kyle’s family life and struggles as well.

Although there have been some controversies surrounding the accuracy of the events told in this film I still feel it was well directed. It’s easy to follow the progress of the story and events without having to ask the usual “What just happened” or “What is going on” questions. I believe all the action scenes had the right amounts of elements needed to make them thrilling, entertaining and a bit emotional as well. 

I personally in a way agree with some of the critics of this film who think this title some how idolizes a man who enjoyed killing Iraqis. Yes… the whole story pitted America against Iraq depicting all Iraqis as villains… this I strongly feel was wrong. Although I might not fully understand the complexities associated with this America versus Iraq thing I still didn't like the fact that this film seemed to portray even children as being villains. (My mind though)

I was also not impressed with the way the film ended. It would have been nice showing exactly how Chris Kyle died. Instead of just pointing out his death. I am tempted to think it was left out deliberately so as not to void his war hero persona in a way. But from what I have read about his death I don’t think that would have in anyway negatively influenced the strengths of the American Sniper. 

That is why I am scoring this movie 7/10. I enjoyed it well enough and it had me interested and at the edge of my seat from the start till that not so impressive climax.

I think everyone likes the idea of a dead on accurate sniper and would like to watch this film even without paying attention to the underlying themes of propaganda and chauvinism.

Nonetheless, this is certainly a good movie that I am sure everyone would enjoy seeing more than just once because; everyone to a large extent appreciates bravery and heroism. This film certainly portrays a lot of that. 

Do well to see this movie and find out if you agree with me or not.
